Desktops mirror the contents of folders on your Macs hard drive. When you add, copy or delete files in Desktops or in the original folder (in the Finder for example) the changes will be synched in both locations.
Using Desktops is much like the Finder desktop so you should review the commands in the File menu and contextual menu (right-click or hold down control and click) when selecting one or multiple files.
The side bar is where you access and manage all your available desktops.
To change the side bars apperance (which can be shown as a list or using thumbnails including hidding the bar entirely) use the various items in the View menu. Please note that if you hide the side bar you can still change desktops in the Desktop > Desktops menu.
Desktops can be added by dragging folders onto the side bar or by using the New Desktops... item in the File menu. Because desktops mirror contents of existing folders you must choose a folder on your Mac or create a new folder in a specific location.
To delete a desktop, contextual click on the desktop in the side bar and choose Delete from the menu or use the Delete Desktop item in the Desktop menu. Deleting a desktop will not delete all the files in the folder but simply remove it from Desktops.
Every desktop has a unique list of options which affect properties like: name, icon size/spacing, text size, background picture and hot key (for activating the desktop when Desktops is not the active application).
To edit a desktop contextual click on the desktop in the side bar (or desktop background) and choose the Edit... item or use the Edit Desktop... item in the Desktop menu.
Desktops can be searched by using the standard Finder search window or by using a quick filter which filters all the files in the desktop by name. Pressing return on the selected item will open the file as if it were double-clicked.
To search a desktop see the Find items in the File menu.
Please note you can filter the content of folders like any desktop by contextual clicking on the folder and choosing Find... or by using the Find in "..." item in the File menu (providing a folder is currently selected).
Devices like your hard drive and other removable media such as DVD's, USB sticks and external hard drives can be shown on the desktop like in the Finder.
To show devices on a deskop open the edit options window (see the section Options above) and check the Show Devices box.
